CHARITABLE SPIRIT ALIVE AND WELL DESPITE RECESSION

Our Super Draw has shown that the charitable spirit in Newport is flourishing despite the recession, raising more than fifteen thousand pounds for good causes in the city.

The culmination of nine months hard work was a grand draw at Newport Rugby Club, where the substantial total was unveiled.

The lucky winners took home prizes including the coat and jodhpurs worn by equestrian David Broom at the 1988 Olympics, signed Welsh and Newport Gwent Dragons rugby shirts, and many others.

The generosity of the people of Newport was matched by harpist Bethan Nia and town poet Goff Morgan, who both gave their services for free at the draw, and provided top class entertainment into the bargain.

The president of NURC, Lyndan Oelmann said, "We were overwhelmed by the response to this raffle - it's a testament to the fact that despite these difficult times, people will still put their hands in their pockets when the money is going to help those less fortunate. I'd also like to pay tribute to the hard work of Rotary members and others, who worked tirelessly to raise this fantastic sum. On behalf of all those who will benefit - thank you."

Among the good causes to benefit are Leukaemia Research, Gwent Cancer Support, Cathedral Restoration Fund, Newport PHAB, Victim Support,
