Elimination of Polio Worldwide

Rotary is running a campaign called “Thanks for Life” this year, which aims to get rid of polio worldwide.

Polio is a virus that attacks the central nervous system, resulting in anything from withered and distorted limbs to paralysis and eventually death. It can attack folk at any age but the under-5s are most at risk. THERE IS NO CURE but immunisation can protect those at risk

Rotary International started its POLIO PLUS campaign 25years ago. Rotarians throughout the world joined forces with three other organisations raising substantial sums of money. At the same time, they gave” hands on” help in the countries at risk. The results have been dramatic. In 1985 there were 125 countries where polio was endemic. Now there are only 4: Pakistan Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.

Bill Gates has always supported Polio Plus not only financially but also actively in the immunisation centres themselves. In recognising the magnitude of the task but also its feasibility, he is giving a total of $355million to the campaign. The deal is that for every £1 we raise he will donate £1.77 so the money available would then be £2.77. £1million would become £2.77 million and so on.
