In October 2010 the mayors of Newport and Kutaisi formally opened Newport’s ‘Kutaisi Walk’ on the banks of the river Usk. During the visit and through Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association (NKTA) the Rotary Club of Newport Uskmouth were given opportunity to promote Rotary as a service organisation. Members of the club, together with Rosemary Butler AM, explained to the Georgians what the organisation does locally and internationally and went on to encourage the visitors to form their own Rotary club in Kutaisi.

Rotary Club of Newport Uskmouth President, David Buckley, said “Our club’s link in Kutaisi has been keeping us up to date with developments and at the beginning of May this year reported that the registration process with Rotary International had been completed. The Rotary Club of Kutaisi is now officially part of Rotary International.” The new club is in District 2450, which embraces Armenia, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates.

There is a current membership of twenty and the club’s founder President is Mr. Rezo Robakidze, one of the most active members of the Kutaisi Newport Twinning Association. He is also a prominent member of the Mayors office and one time head of one of the leading banks in the city.

They were really keen to form the club and sent a delegation to Tbilisi to meet with members of the two Rotary clubs there. At a later stage another delegation was sent to Cairo, Egypt, to meet with the Rotary District Governor. This happened at the time of the unrest and change of government and the group had to leave quickly.

David Buckley said he wished them well and looked forward to continuing the link between the two clubs.
